Upgrading Computer from Win98 to Win2000
How can I upgrade my Computer from Win98 to Win2000?
Do I have to insert the Cd of Win2000 after completely starting the Computer on Win98 and then follow the upgrade process? Will their be any problem if I use this upgraded Computer in a network environment which is running a Win2003 Server and other Client Machines as WinXP? My Computer Configuration: WinXP pro edition, 128 MB RAM 10GB Segate HDD CPU 1 Ghz Intel P3. |

personally i would backup your data and do a clean install. im not a fan of upgrades, any problems that you had before will be carried over to the new upgrade install and possibly many more.

You should determine which is better for you, either an upgrade or a new installation. Certain situations may dictate that, even though you are currently running Windows 95 or Windows 98, you may prefer or even need to do a new installation (or "clean install"), rather than an upgrade. By installing the operating system from scratch, you place the operating system in a known state and avoid migrating any problems, hidden or otherwise, that may have existed in the previous configuration. Since a new installation will require the reformatting of your hard disk, you should always back up your data, such as documents, pictures and the like, and then install Windows 2000, reinstall your applications, and then copy over or restore your data from backup. You should upgrade if all of the following are true: You’re already using a previous version of Windows that supports upgrading. You want to replace your previous Windows operating system with Windows 2000. You want to maintain your existing user settings and files. You should perform a new installation if any of the following are true: Your hard drive is blank (that is, you have no operating system installed on it). Your current operating system does not support an upgrade to Windows 2000. You have two partitions and want to create a dual-boot configuration with Windows 2000 and your current operating system. (Be sure to install Windows 2000 on a different partition than your current operating system.) Typically, dual-boot configurations are suitable for testing and evaluation; however, they are not recommended for long-term production use. http://dewassoc.com/support/win2000/upgrade9x.htm

Refer to my comments in your other thread - which you really should have kept here, not start a new one. |
