virtual machines
when using a virtual machine through vmware, is the virtual machine protected through the host firewall?
do i have to install a firewall in the guest machine?

from my understanding they are two totally seperate OS's with one running on top of the other so you would have to install your own firewall, since the virtual machine has its own ip address, it is seperate from the host machine's ip address.

i've set it to access the internet through the host.
wouldn't my firewall (zonealarm) warn me that something is trying to gain access to the internet/computer anyway? |

it might. you could test it by using another pc and ping the ip of the virtual machine to see if you get replies, or try accessing a shared folder on the virtual machine and see if your host firewall (zone alarm) prevents you from accessing it, or warns you that another pc is trying to access that one

VMWare simply acts as an emulator, so the host OS should handle any firewall issues.

Beg to differ. While your logic stands to reason, that isnt how it actually goes down when using network bridging. The virtual OS is totally independant and can get infected easily when not protection is on it. If you plan to use VMware for an extended time, put in an antivirus or firewall. And dont forget them shapshots :P
