windows image
Hi, When running Norton Antivirus 2006 in a computer with WinXP pro SP2 I try to do a full scan, or smart scan and get the message:
c:\windows\system32\dinput.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette How do I check the file against the install disk? I would like to have an idea before I just stick it into the computer what is going to happen. Do I do a repair of the OS? Or can it just check the OS for errors and repair them while the computer is running? I've scanned for virus from the Symantec websites on-line scanner and there aren't any virus showing up. We were having trouble with the email in Outlook. When it downloaded emails, the text and attachments were all gone. I have that fixed by running Norton Antivirus Live Update and installing some updates. But now I can't get it to scan the hard drives. I'm just a hacker, no computer expert, somehow I just get things fixed. Usually ![]() TIA, Jim |

start>run>cmd>type w/o quotes "chkdsk x: /r"
x: is the drive you want to scan

It is possible that you have have an infected computer. Check on http://housecall.antivirus.com/ just to be safe. It is also possible that the file was corrupt. If you can rule out that your system is clean you can try running the following from a command prompt (START > RUN > cmd)
sfc /scannow More details on the system file checker are here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747 |

I've run the sfc /scannow and it didn't find anything. I'm waiting to run chkdsk when no one is working off of that computer. It's being used as a file server besides a workstation.
Thanks for the help so far. I'll let you know what happens. |

I ran chkdsk /r and that didn't change anything. Went to the Symantec website from the message that came up when I tried to run a scan and went through reinstalling Norton Antivirus 2006 the way they said and it didn't work. Then disabled scanning compressed files which was their second fix, and that didn't work.
I'll try to reinstall DirectX when I get another chance. I'm not sure what the connection is between running scans and video. But that's computers. I'll run another virus scan with on the computer also with another program too. |

dinput.dll is a DirectX component, not a native Windows component. Download the full install - the redistributable.

Reinstalled DirectX and that didn't work. I've downloaded and nistalled NOD32 trial for virus protection and disabled Norton AntiVirus for now. It hasn't found anything yet.

When I put my cursor over the DINPUT.dll file in my computer it tells me that the file is a Microsoft DirectInput file by Microsoft and the file version and date created. On the problem computer there is only Date Created. What would happen if I copied my file into that computer?

I guess I'll have to think of something else. I haven't tried copying over the file. Tried contacting Symantec and they think it's probably a virus. I'm scanning with their on-line virus scanner and it hasn't found anything. That takes about 4 hours. Not sure what to try next. Maybe a different section of the forum. I'm going to email Symantec again.

Uninstall Norton completely and register your NOD32. You will be much better off. I don't believe that you have an actual problem, I think Norton is just being Norton.

That would be my decision if it were my computer. I use it NOD32 at home. I'll give this one more try to save Norton. They sent me an email with instructions on using their uninstall program and what files to delete afterward. Then another reinstall and we'll see if it works. I'll have to wait until after today to do it. At least we don't have Norton nagging us with pop-ups every time it should be scanning something, now that I have the first step done of uninstalling it.
Thanks all. |
