Retail comes with a box and manual. OEM is the CD only. So save the money, go OEM.

If you are asking whether to get an OEM version or a Retail version of XP professional. I would say that hands down you are much better off getting the retail version. You can even sell that version separate from the computer if you decide to do that, or even completely change out the hardware and still use it. OEM is such a pain when it comes to the restrictions they place on it.

OEM. You can reactivate it after hardware upgrades no problem, you just can't resell it unless the whole computer goes with it.

Is there REALLY anything you NEED in the manual?
----- Most posts I've seen re: problems are from people who are new to installing OS (me) and don't know what to select. Program manuals I've had are a very bad read unless you're really an expert at the subject. If you know what your looking for, they're probably good, but if your clueless like I"m going to be, they're a lot of drink coasters. I'm leaning toward OEM. I figure this is a good place for answers QUICK and RIGHT and LESS FRUSTRATING! Besides, if I need a new one because the 30 day warranty ran out, it's back to Newegg. I'll risk that if I've got a better that 50% of getting it right, with help. AND I'll save $100!!! |

No, you don't NEED anything in the manual. As you have discovered, this site is much better for answers!

There is really no "manual" supplied with the retail version. It is just a short booklet full of information that would be useless to all but complete novice computer users.
I always buy OEM. Kev

One other thing to keep in mind is that the Retail version offers 3 Microsoft Support Sessions while the OEM charges for those.
I'd get the OEM, though. I always have.
