Whether you like it or not......
...here comes Internet Explorer 7. The latest auto update from MS is IE7. Anyone who has Windows Update set to auto update is in for a little surprise!
I setup a new Dell laptop last nite and during the WU run, IE7 was coming in as a standard upgrade. So I guess the bottom line is this, if you're not ready for IE7 yet, set your Automatic Updates to either "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them" or "Turn off Automatic Updates". Prepare to be nagged by the yellow shield if you pick "Notify me.."

Or do this: add this value to your registry. It will disable automatic updates of IE7.
To use it, download it, change the extension from .TXT to .REG, and then double-click on it. Or you can just open it as a text file and add the value manually. There is no way IE7 is getting on my machines! I added this registry key to the login script for all of my users. |

Another way to disable the notification from Windows Update - go to the MS WU site and select the Custom scan button. When IE7 is shown as a critical update, expand the notice by clicking the + sign. Then select the box "Don't show me this update again". You will then see that you have hidden a High Priority update whenever you manually go to the WU site.

Hi all,
I don't get the option to hide the update. It's listed now as a High-Priori update , if that makes any difference mickzer. |

Don't use the Express option for the scan. Use the Custom scan. Then you'll be able to hide the update.

Yeah, I've got Automatic Updates set to the "Notify me" option and this thing showed up last night. At first I thought "What the heck? This isn't patch Tuesday yet!", but then I saw it was IE7 and couldn't believe they made that an auto update item. I figure I'll just let the little yellow shield sit down there in my taskbar for awhile until I decide it's safe to download it. I'd use one of the fixes mentioned above, but as forgetful as I am sometimes, I'd forget to go back and get it after it WAS deemed safe.

Hi Panama Red,
Hiding IE 7.0 doesn't work, Microsoft just "Unhides" it and downloads it anyway. I had it set to download automatically then I'd choose if I wanted to install it. I did install it but I don't think it will last too long on my computer. mickzer. |

You need to use the registry edit to block it, see Dr. G's post above.

OK ,I'll try that if I do decide to uninstall it. I suppose I might as well try it out now I've downloaded it. mickzer |

Yeah, this update really bugs me. IE 7 has proven to be a pain. It still should be classified as beta in my book. I have had to uninstall this browser more times than I should've.
M$ is looking to replace IE6 and all versions of Windows prior to XP. M$ is either going to shoot itself in the foot with it's new Vista licensing or completely control the computer softrware market. |
