How can I map a folder to appear in "My computer"
When I wish to save something and the folder I wish is five or six clicks down from "My computer" how can I create a shortcut on "My Computer" so I don't have to repeatedly click repeatedly to get to the folder I want.
I'm sure you used to be able to "Map drives" to a folder. But this does not seem to be available. I'm using W2K SP4. Do I just have to do it as a shortcut on desktop? Dazzer |

Is the folder shared? If so you can still map it as usual. Or you could do it from within a command console using:
net use x: \\computer_name\folder_to_be_shared Addendum: Just to clarify since its getting lost .. this can be done on a LOCAL folder as per the user's requirements without having to resort to a shortcut! Mapping is not just for folders on remote computers! Last edited by Statica; 11-03-2006 at 12:26 PM. Reason: Addendum! |

Navigate to the folder you want to save to. Right click on this folder, select 'create shortcut'. This will create a shortcut within the folder you are using. Open another instance of my computer. Drag and drop the created folder to where ever you want.

If that folder is available in the same computer ,then simply make the shortcut of that folder in my computer. If that folder is available on another computer ,then use the command
in command prompt as Statica has written: net use \\computer_name\folder_to_be_shared computer_name = the computer where the shared folder is present. folder_to_be_shared= the shared folder that you want to map on your computer. Or you can simply right click My Computer and click "Map Network Drive",a window will pop up asking you to choose a drive letter for the shared folder that you want to map on your computer and also you have to give the path of the folder . If you cannot write the path ,then click browse button and go to the computer where the shared folder is available and click the folder. After that you will see an extra drive appearing in My Computer with a drive letter that you choosed. Regards, Last edited by ITlover; 11-03-2006 at 11:45 AM. |

ITLover I dont know why you paraphrased my information wrong but let me clarify it for you ...
FYI you can create a mapped local drive .. yes even on your local computer. There is absolutely no need to make a shortcut if you dont want to. Mapping works EXACTLY as it would if the folder was on a remote computer. All you need to do is create the share For example if you local computer is ITLOVER > For folder C:\Music > Right click > select properties > Sharing > New Share > Share name: Music > & Permissions as you see fit! Then either create a share through explorer or open a command prompt and type the following from your c:\ net use M: \\ITLOVER\Music and you shold see an M drive that takes you to C:\Music! |
