Vista Activation based on Hard Drive Swap Out/In ??? :O(

Howdy

I just read Dave Risleys comments on Vista activation in the editors section of an email news update.

Tying reactivation to hard drive swapout/in seems like a rediculous way to go for MS.
I know MS have to do something about OS piracy and have an investment to safeguard
BUT this requirement could drive users and support people alike crazy !

Some people are constantly working on their systems, trying new drives, replaceing
faulty ones, installing new OSes (and different versions of Windows).
I have literally made DOZENS of hard drive changes to many of my older systems
especially. If I had to reactivate every install it would drive me nuts.

I'm sorry but 10 HD changes will NOT be enough and MS shouldn't be tying a single
copywrited copy of Windows to the hard drive. A copywrited OS copy should be tied
to a SYSTEM ! The mobo is the heart of a system and reactivation should be tied to
this ! I thought this was the original basis and specification for reactivation especially for XP ?

Putting up with any reactivation requirements is inconvenient enough
(but I understand the requirement) BUT if we have to have it, it should be tied to the
mobo ! 10 mobo changes would be a lot for any system and is unlikely to happen for most systems so this requirement would be reasonable if tied to the mobo.

I just wondered what others think about this. Do MS really have to make life so
complicated for the users of their products (and I'm talking about maintenance) ?

I really hope MS don't firm on this reactivation approach for the release of Vista.
This kind of product delivery could make many people look at alternative OSes
( Linux perhaps ?).

I'm closing this one.

Please use this thread for this issue:

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=167743

Note that the requirements have NOT been finalized yet. Microsoft is listening to enthusiasts and it's not worth getting all hot and bothered about until it appears on the retail shelves. It's not even RTM for the big OEM's yet, much less the end user market.
