Trouble installing XP on a new HD

Hello All,

I just installed a new HD in my system. When I put the Windows XP install disk in, it would make it to the screen that reads: "Setup is examining your computers hardware configuration..." Then the system reboots.

Any ideas?

Is the drive jumpered as master or cable select?

If you go into setup is the drive seen?

Yep! Sure is the same PC. I had everything working on the PC finally until the new drive physically died. I exchanged it for a new one. The drive is currently set to Cable Select and I can see it in the BIOS. As a matter-of-fact, I can access it if I use a WinME boot disk. I can fdisk it, format it, everything. The only thing I'm having problems with now is installing WinXP.

Motherboard problem? I hope not!

Plus, when I tried to install my old drive in another system, it had the same problem. I don't think that was a motherboard problem there.

I always like going Master Slave there are to many "If's" with Cable Select.

If you can boot via your ME boot disk try booting with CDRom support then go to your E: drive by Typing E: ENTER (Or whichever your CDROM drive with the windows disk in it shows up then type CD I386 ENTER
then WINNT ENTER

If it reboots then after inspecting hardware I'd be running some memory diagnostics or disabling some stuff in BIOS (like BIOS cache or anything that might help get the ball rolling), wouldn't hurt to pull some expansion cards too maybe a sound card or TV turner is giving XP a wrong impression.

Last resort would be a low level format of the drive, or an FDISK /MBR from that ME Boot disk.

Thanks again for the help everyone. I found out what the problem was. Too many installs with an old CD. It's all good now and the system is running like a dream (finally!).

Cheers

What do you mean that you had too many installs on your CD? Is there a limit to how many times you can install XP?

I was having a similar issue and I can't figure out the problem.

Thanks.
