Hi, I have a HUGE problem. I run Windows XP Home Edition and I was using partition magic to move two blank partitions and merge them with my main boot partition. My computer had just rebooted and started the operation when the power cut out. Now my computer doesn't get past the BIOS loading screen, I am guessing the main partition has been corrputed. How can I fix this??
Thanks In Advance, P. Osborne |

So, you were merging two smaller partitions into your boot partition and the power cut out? You are a very unlucky man. Hate to say this, but I don't believe that there is any way to get any information back without sending your HD away to a recovery agency. I believe http://www.harddriverx.com/ can do that for you though. The pricing is a bit high, I am not an expert, but I don't believe there is any other way to recover a scrambled partition.

before you send your drive away, try running a chkdsk /p from the recovery console by booting to the xp cd.
otherwise try running a windows repair http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm if those are unsuccessful, take the drive out of a pc and put it into another machine in the slave position if its an IDE drive and see if you can still access the main partition to backup your files then reinstall XP.

And don't forget that in the future, you should be operating on a UPS instead of just plugging it into a surge protector before performing such a critical operation on a HDD.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm going to try that program and if that doesn't work I'll see about the service. Unfortunately, I can't find out if they will take clients from Toronto.
Thanks Again, Patrick O. |

It seems interesting, but would it protect from the problem that I had? The webpage didn't mention anything about partitioning.

Spin-Rite is used for data recovery, and checking disk integrity, not for partitioning. I would try booting to the recovery console as Ob1 suggested, and use the chkdsk, fixboot and fixmbr commands. hopefully that will fix the problem. I suggested Spin-Rite if you need to recover your data, it is a lot more cost effective than sending it to a recovery lab.

Have you tried booting with the Partition Magic rescue disks and seeing what that can do with your partitions?
However, if it won't even boot with a floppy, the power cut has physically damaged some hardware. Unplug the hard drive and see if it will boot to a floppy or a CD, if it does, then the hard drive is toast. |
