Ok, I have a computer that uses Windows XP Home and I have Win XP Pro cd that came from a friend. I know you can't use the same product key so I'm wondering if you can still install xp pro since I"m formatting the hard drive and use the xp home product key that came with the computer? Or would I need to borrow xp home cd from a friend and enter my original xp home product key that came with the computer?

You cannot use your XP Home product key on XP Pro. You will need XP Home to use with your existing license.

You legally need a new cd key for each machine you install the OS on. If Windows Genuine Advantage picks up that the key is on multiple machines it may invalidate the install and make it difficult to get updates.

You can use another copy of XP home,at the time it asks for the product key, enter your product key.
Did the computer come witkh a copy of XP on disk? If it didn't, the files may be on the hard drive in a hidden partition and you can format the drive and reinstall XP with that. |

No, it did not come with a cd at all. Another question.....suppose your computer is xp sp1 and you have sp2 cd....can you use that cd and use your own product key or must it be sp1 cd to use it?

I think the keys are tied to a particular version of say XP Home: Home SP1/Home SP2/Home SP 1 Upgrade/ etc.
Can give it a try, worse that could happen the install will reject the key.

The keys work through the service packs, obviously. So if you have a key for SP1 and you put in SP2 it would work fine. In fact, if you only have an SP1 or original version CD, it is highly recommended that you slipstream into a SP2 CD and then install. However, if a CD key has been blacklisted on SP2 for being a known pirated key, then it wouldnt work .. obviously.

if the pc originally came with a cd you could always call gateway and see if they can ship you a replacement disc with xp home on it.
