If I upgrade my CPU will this affect WGA?

Hi

I want to upgrade my somewhat old motherboard (Asus P4G8X) that has a 2.53G P4 to a 3.06G P4 with HT. I have heard that the WGA with Windows XP is some how linked to the CPU's serial. My question is if I was to upgrade to this new CPU will this some how affect the WGA of my Windows XP home install?

Its been a long time since I logged in here last but I'm always lurching here cuz this place is full of great info. Its been a long time since I put this PC together and its about time I put it to its limits as its time is about up considering current trends with new tech.

Thanks for your help.

I belive it's for Windows validation only, even if collects hardware info, I think it can't blacklist or block any hardware from upgrading or replacing!!!

No. wga has nothing to do with the cpu. Its the operating system that it is protecting against , so go ahead and change your cpu . Have fun m8.

If you meant WPA (Windows Product Activation) and it is connected with WGA then it registers the Processor type and serial number in its hardware hash. However, you should have no problems with the upgrade. For one, just the processor change should not affect the WPA (it just accounts for 2 categories) .. secondly, if at all you fail the hardware check, you will get a number to call MS and get your Windows reactivated. WGA will then follow just fine.

Here's what Microsoft has to say: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302878
Read the question: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302878#5h
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.php breaks it down quite nicely.

A thought - changing the processor from a non-HT to a HT - will this cause a HAL issue? Will Windows see it as hyperthreaded - therefore 2 processors - with no problems?

As far as Windows is concerned, XP should upgrade the HAL to use it as a multiprocessor HAL. There should be no issue, it should be as if the HT was enabled from the BIOS. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;810231
