You can't mix retail and oem keys or cd's.

Have to use the recovery disks/partiton that comes with the Dell. Unless you want to buy a retal xp and use the key that came with that (And deal with the driver issues after the install).

I seem to be the guy taking the alternate path here (again). I don't know about Dell, but I have successfully reformated and installed XP Home using my slipstreamed XP Home cd on a couple of eMachines. I used the eMachines Product Key and it worked without a hitch. One Activated over the internet while the second required a phone call to reactivate. The slipstreamed disk was made using an OEM XP Home disk and the SP2 disk from MS. I've also used the same disk to do a couple of Repair Installs on store bought machines and again, used the Product Key on the case.

If the Dell came with XP Home, you need to buy an OEM copy of XP Home - that's about $90. You can install it on the Dell using the Dell key and on another computer using the key that came with the CD.
HOWEVER - if you buy the reinstall XP CD from Dell for $10, you can use that on the Dell ONLY, and it will not install all the preinstalled crap, it's just a generic XP CD keyed to the Dell bios. If all you want to do is get rid of all the preinstalled crap, just use PC Decrapifier - that's what it was specifically made for - cleaning up Dells. |
