Windows Updater causes restart

When trying to install the latest security updates for XP my Son's computer will restart every time, also the firewall feature in the control panel is now off and unaccessible. He has been having spyware problems lately which we can't seem to remove completely, every time he opens the browser He gets redirected and is flooded with pop-ups, could this be the prob? We have ran ccleaner, spybot, regMechanic, adaware, and have AVG anti-virus running. Any suggestions?

What version and SP of XP is running on that computer? The fact that you're getting inundated with popups is a sure sign that you've got some malware in there that is just not getting out.

I know it sounds like a backout rather than a solution to the problems but a reinstall of Windows may be in order.

It sounds like that computer has something nasty that can't be removed easily. Personally I would cut my losses, save all the data you want to keep and start from fresh. Assuming you have all the software to load back on!

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
Do a full system scan with AVG and do an online scan at Ewido.net. Before doing either, dump all the temp and temp internet files as well as the temp files in Java.

Well I did the AVG/Ewido anti-spyware scan and it found 28 files and removed them, 2 trojans and the rest were adware. However The windows updater still would'nt work so I did a clean install and all is fine now. will make sure my son keeps his system protected at all times, He has a habit of turning off the protection when playing certain online games.
