DirectX 9.0c Install Error
Sorry in advance if this is in the wrong forum, but Im pretty sure its appropriate here, and if there is a thread about this error already, but I couldn't seem to find it.
Having problems trying to play my new Battlefield 2142 game. I keep getting an error message "d3dx9_29.dll was not found, reinstalling this application may solve the problem." I took this error as a DirectX issue, and downloaded the newest DirectX 9.0c from the Windows website. Now, I can't completely install the DirectX, at the end of the install, I get an error message which tells me, "The necessary cabinet file cannot be trusted. Please make sure Cryptographic Services are enabled and the cabinet certificate is valid." Now I have no clue what this means, but I did some research and my Cryptographic services are enabled. Im sorta stumped here, and any information would be great. Im downloading the 9.0c redistributable to see if maybe that will work. Thanks |

Please give us your system's specifications, especially video card details.

Have you reinstalled the drivers from the disc? Is this (all together) the first time that you have tried that game on this system?

I get an error installing the DirectX drivers from the disc. This is the first time I have tried the game on my system, and I had the same problem when trying to play the demo. I know its a DirectX problem, but I don't know what the cabinet certificates are.

Im also unable to install any new Video Card drivers or motherboard drivers from the NVIDIA website. I get an error that says "The executable you are trying to run has been corrupted, please obtain a new version of the file and try again." This is a new computer I just built, and no other games give me problems when I try to play them.

No not everything. Im able to download game patches. But anything I try to download from the Nvidia website, I get an error saying that the files got corrupted. So Im not able to get the latest video card/ mobo drivers.

This is to correct the cryptographic services error : http://www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-service.html
It's possible that you won't have any problems once you've fixed that. Last edited by pam123; 11-19-2006 at 07:17 PM. |

Thanks for the link. I did end up downloading the Update from Windows but I didn't think it was a Cryptographic services error, so the problem still exists. So now I'm guessing its most likely the cabinet certificates. I don't really know what those are though.....in internet options it has a list of certificates my comp has for trusted sites and stuff like that, could that be it? If so Im not sure what I'm supposed to do here either.

cab.files are used by ActiveX and for installs, among other things.
If you haven't run a malware check then do so but it's beginning to sound more and more as if you should do a repair install , if not a complete reinstall of XP. Something really basic just isn't right. Instructions here : http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=151522 |

I tried running the Windows Repair, but now I can only boot into safe mode. It always resets itself at the Windows XP loading screen (All black screen, with Windows XP in the middle and a blue bar loading underneath). It even does this when I click "Start from last good point."

Tell me what steps you followed.
If you did a repair correctly and that followed you have a hardware problem, either memory or bad sectors on the hard drive are the most likely. |

Here's the steps I followed.
1. Enter BIOS and set Boot from Disc top priority 2. Started Windows normally, inserted disc then did a restart 3. Hit Enter to boot from disc. 4. Hit Enter at Windows Setup or whatever to install windows 5. Got a list of things I wanted to repair, only thing on the list was Windows XP Home Edition 6. Hit 'R' to repair Windows 7. Windows initialized setup, then did restart 8. Did NOT hit boot from disc on next startup, Windows entered Windows XP setup on my computer. 9. Followed directions to insert a Nvidia Bus Driver CD, then put Windows CD in again when prompted. 10. Typed in my CD key for Windows. 11. Windows gets to finalizing point of setup, then restarts. 12. I don't hit anything or touch the BIOS. 13. Windows start gets to Windows loading screen, then resets. (This is my problem) Can only access my computer through Safe Mode. I don't think it could be a hardware problem if everything's new and worked fine before running the repair. |

Ok I ended up doing a complete reinstallation of XP and it still hasn't fixed the problem. I get the same error downloading the newest DirectX 9.0c from microsoft. I can't download the newest video card drivers, I've tried multiple places, and they always end up being corrupted. It seems to be luck that certain patches/drivers I download will actually work. Its ridiculous I'm not contacting Windows to pay 35 bucks for something which should have been working the first time. How to I run a malware check?

Run chkdsk on the hard drive and run memtest.
Hardware problems really do just drop from the blue. |
