Hey Y'all, wonder if anyone can help me on this one?
When I click on the Start button and then go to All Programs, it takes a long time for the list to show all my programs. Is there anyway to speed up this process. Something in the registry? (This happens both on my desktop and my new dual core laptop. They both have similar programs installed.) The next times that I click on it, it appears faster, but if I don't click on it in a while, it'll do the same thing and take a long time to load. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone. |

start>run>regedit
navigate down to HKCU>control panel>desktop>look for REG_SZ file called Menushowdelay. the default value is 400, change it to 0 and reboot.

It's quicker to hit F3 and search for Menushowdelay.

It is already set at 0. Still slow. What's the deal?

Are you using any transitions or effects with XP?
Also you could try deleting the IconCache by deleting the file: C:/Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data/IconCache.db Last edited by Statica; 11-20-2006 at 01:47 PM. |

Can you explain by what you mean by transitions or effects. I do not recall changing anything drastic. It's basically set up the way I had it as soon as XP installed. I have windows default look set as well .

Control Panel > Display Properties > Appearance tab > Effects... button > Uncheck tranisitions for menus and tooltips and uncheck shaddows under Menus.
Try to see if it makes a difference. A lot of the standard GUI on XP is just really slow and lumbering especially with time when the icon cache grows and the memory usage from other programs also grows. Personally, switching to the XP style GUI helps a ton (Appearance tab > Windows & Buttons drop down > Windows classic style. |

So are you saying switching to the default XP style will help run things a little smoother than going to windows old look??
