Question Win2k / Mediaplayer complications

I have a refreshed system a friend brought back to me that is having a lot of problems with mediaplyer.

The system is a P4, 384mb, 60gig with win2k sp2 with a bare minimum of software that includes: open office 2.0, trend micro antivirus, outlook express, napster (subscription), netscape 7.2, IE 6.0, Mediaplayer 9.0, Nero 5.5.9, soundmax, ati dvd, and intel board drivers.

The problem is that on any email that he gets that has a video clip, mediaplayer will only show the first few seconds and the picture goes out but sound remains. Sometimes it will get stuck and sit there skipping like a scratched cd.

The only way I have been able to get around it is to uninstall mediaplayer 9 which reverts it back to 6.0 and then it works. Problem then is his napster music will not play because 6.0 does not have the right security checks.

He is used to mediaplayer and would like to keep it. Any suggestions on what I could do to fix this?

What happens if he saves the video file to his hard drive and then opens it?

Thanks, but he is opening it with Outlook Express so it is saved to the drive.

I forgot to mention I also tried uninstalling media player updates just to see and win2k repair but to no avail. I also haven't found any info when researching this problem.

Is there a particular reason that SP4 hasn't been applied to the O/S? This may clear up this issue.

your right he is saving it to the hard drive when its downloaded into outlook express the problem is that its contained inside the outlook express dbx files. so if you right clickon the video attachment and choose save as and save it in his my document folder which would save a copy outside of the OE dbx files do you still have the video cut out or does it play as it normally should.

Ok, I tried saving the video file from outside OE and then running it and it has the same issues of only showing visual for a few seconds but continues to play audio.

WMP10 is not compatible with win2k.

Keep the ideas coming. Thanks.

just for troubleshooting purposes if you try a different media player (Real player, Winamp) does the video still cut out but audio continues to play.

Direct X diagnostics

Try installing the K-Lite Codec Pack.
