wierd icon problem in control pannel

Re: the icon it seems to have been something that was "broken" by Microsoft through successive builds of Windows Media Player.
If you look at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{640167b4-59b0-47a6-b335-a6b3c0695aea} you should see the the icon addresses an icon in the file \system32\audiodev.dll. However, you might probably find the file missing.

However, if you're using WMP 10 and are experiencing problems with the WMDM you could apply the hotfix here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895316

Did you use a WMP beta before? It might explain it. I dont think audiodev.dll is carried on WMP11 either. And I'd recommend against using the hotfix I'd linked. You could either live with the issue till MS fixes the icon issue (it's fairly cosmetic) or you could use the registry key and change the icon to something that you like.
