New OS

If a person were to make a new computer, which OS would you suggest for him and why?

In general, stick with Windows XP Home. It is the most popular and recent OS. Pro isn't needed for most people, and x64 has driver issues.

Have you considered Linux? If you don't want to shell out for XP then a free linux distribution might be a good idea. Although i will be fair and say that Linux environments can differ a lot from windows and you may find it challenging (or potentially impossible depending on hardware you plan to use) if you've only used windows in the past. I use Ubuntu, it keeps me happy.

MCE is more than just XP Pro here's the product info: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/m...r/default.mspx
However, make sure you read the hardware requirements for MCE as it is slightly different from XP.

So basically the only downfall of Media Center is that it doesn't connect to the network wireless. but that should be fixed if you get a wireless card or get your network wired.
Other than that it does everything that Professional does ... right?

No. Supposedly the newer versions of MCE are based off of XP Home and not Pro. Also, what are do you mean MCE doesn't connect to the network wireless? Without a wireless card, no OS can allow you to connect wirelessly.

If you want your computer to be a media hub, you get MCE. Otherwise it's Pro or Home. Another thing to consider is that if you buy XP now, you'll probably get a coupon for a free Vista upgrade.

The intended use for your system will help determine which OS to get.
