More Then 1 OS installed?
Hi,
My computer recently had a very weird experience recently where evrything seemed to stop working. [Windows XP Home Edition with SP2] so to solve [hopefully] all my problems, I decided to re-install Windows Xp Home Edition. Everything seemed to be fine untill I restarted my computer and found 2 OS installed. How can I get rid of one of them? MKJ |

It sounds to me like you have redundant entries in your boot.ini file. Edit your boot.ini file removing the old entry and you will be good to go.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022 If you go the command line route, IIRC you need to unhide and unlock the file with attrib -s -h -r boot.ini. Be sure to set the attributes back if you go this route instead of the System Startup method in the KB article above. |

You got that because instead of re-installing over the top you installed it beside the old version...now you have 2...
Best thing would be to zero fill the drive and re-install XP to get back your full drive space.. Or you can do as above and live with 4gig less space...?

Hi Rightcoast,
I've tried as you state below, but Windows XP Home Edition does not support this. It sounds to me like you have redundant entries in your boot.ini file. Edit your boot.ini file removing the old entry and you will be good to go. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022 Is there anyother way of deleting the Operating System I don't want? you mention below this way of doing it, but in laymans terms how do I do it. If you go the command line route, IIRC you need to unhide and unlock the file with attrib -s -h -r boot.ini. Be sure to set the attributes back if you go this route instead of the System Startup method in the KB article above. Carpy |

This is typical of a Windows install. Just disable the selection screen when you first boot-up and you will never know the other entry is there:
Right Click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Start Up and Recovery > Settings Uncheck the box for "Time to display list of operating systems" |
