Help With Constant Freezing

Hello, have an HP that constantly freezes. runs for about 5-10 minutes then just locks up, have to hard boot to return it to service for another short amount of time. Have done MS ram test, all checks good, have blown out the very few dust bunnies, replaced the HDD, reinstalled XP, and same problem. Going nuts!

Specs:

Atholon 1.4
768MB pc133 sdram
100GB HDD
Windows XP.

Only basic programs installed.

Was thinking maybe it was some heat-related problem, but all the fans are working (3, Pwr supply, CPU, and Aux case fan ducted to CPU, and yes, they are both blowing towards CPU), and pc will freeze at about same running time all the time, no matter what I am doing with it. Even in safe mode.

Any suggestions?

What programs are running on boot? Any new programs? Have you done all the anti-virus and anti-spyware stuff?

Also, I might wonder about cpu temp.

I am not an expert.

Are you sure that your using anti-virus and anti-spware softwares in your computer?

Is your computer connected to internet?

The computer usually freezes or hangs because of spyware or virus, try scanning your computer with anti-virus and anti-spyware softwares . If you are using internet, then simply go to www.ewido.net and use the free online scanning service.

when the site open, just click on "scan now" on the left side of the page and place check on "cookies, RAM, registry and HDD" and click scan and wait for the results.
If the online scanning service detects any infected files ,delete them.
After that restart your computer and use it to see what happens.

I hope this helps.

Did you install any new software or program before you started to have this problem?

Currently there is NO antivirus installed at all, only what comes with XP on initial install. No other programs. Did same thing with old HDD, and XP. replaced it, and reinstalled clean XP, problem hasnt changed.

If you check task manager at freeze time, is Dr. Watson running?

Weren't the Athlon 1.4's made around the 1950's?

It seems to me that if you have replaced the HDD, reinstalled Windows (assuming of course that it's a legitimate issue), and checked the RAM, AND you're not trying to surf (network...) it's got to be the cpu or mobo.

I'm out of ideas, you'll need to wait for one of the pros to help you.

Well, tending to think it is some kind of hardware issue, Yes, I know it is older, but It was shipped with XP installed. I just don't know what would cause it to suddenly start doing this, or how i could check the CPU to see if it overheating or what to do to cool it down, or even why it would start to overheat "out of the blue"..

What do you mean by 1950's? I hope that isn't the calendar date range you are referring to. Back in the 50's they were still dealing with Vaccume Tube Technology. Univac 1, etc.. Aside from that, a 1.4 is still a very useful machine. Just because the latest video games don't play on a machine doesn't make it obsolete. You'll have to get something like Sandra (http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/) or some other type of tool that can run a burn in test on the machine and test all the hardware on the machine one at a time. Have you tried resetting the motherboard settings to the factory defaults?

I honestly do not know how to do that, and just for questions sake, what would have changed them? I managed to get it to run long enough for PC pitstop, but don't know if it would stay up long enough for Sandra ( I have used it in the past on other machines, but has been awhile...)

If this is an HP Pavilion from the era of about 2001-2003, then you are describing the exact symptoms of computers for which HP is now invloved in a class-action lawsuit. They were shipped with defective motherboards and (apparently) HP became aware of the problem and continued selling them anyway.

The best thing you can do with one of these machines is remove the hard drives, optical drives and memory and then recycle the thing.

I think the cutoff date for being involved in the class action was last May. You may want to contact HP and investigate it further. They have a list of the affected models.

I checked into that and the only models affected are:

"The Settlement only relates to Pavilion computer models 8655c, 8660c, 8750c, 8754c, 8755c, xl756 and xl759."

I have a XT983.... makes me wonder though...

Yeah, after dealing with my girlfriend's HP Pavilion (which was one of the ones on the list) I have recently become much less of a fan of their desktops. I like their scanners and printers though.

What I was thinking was that if you had another working HDD, you could have also installed it in your computer with WinXP on it and then use it to connect to internet . From their you could run the www.ewido.net online scanning service and scan your 1st HDD.

Anyway, if you have replaced your HDD and if still you are having this problem, then it is a hardware issue, your CPU or RAM might be creating problems.

Are you able to boot into safe mode? try that and you can check your CPU performance by going into Task Manager.

I have apparently found a fix for it. While doing some searching for help on 'kev7555's' lawsuit thingy, I came across another forum that someone had the same problem. Seems HP had made this computer and apparently changed the BIOS on it to suit their needs, and never made an update for it. It was supposedly trying to access 'illegal areas' n XP causing the lockups. Changing the "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface" software did the trick. Hasn't froze since! Still don't understand it all, but it worked..

Nice piece of information! I will log that into the repair database should I ever come up with the problem again.

One more reason to stay away from HP desktops...

Glad to hear you got yours working, though.

I have a HP Pavilion 8660c with the same problem. What exactly do you mean by "Changing the "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface" software" ?
