System Restore Does Not Restore

I did a complete computer reset to out of the box settings on the 15th November all fine and installed Norton Internet Security 2007 on my workstation and laptop all fine was done for no reason just wanted a clean machine running Windows Xp media Centre 2005 sp2

Last night my son who is now in need of hospital treatment (lol) opened a pif file sent to him from a so called mate in msn messenger, Norton detected it and blocked a Trojan horse and says that no further actions are required I did a system restore on the laptop and deep scanned with Norton and spybot and adaware which all came up clean

As I am a generally scepital person and have a wireless network that does not share files between computers I scanned my computer which found nothing at all again just incase I thought I would do a system retore back to previous day this came back after going through the motions as not able to restore to that point ? I tried it with others all saying the same

Can anyone help as only been 2 weeks since doing the reset do I need to do it again to get the system restore to work properly I have checked to see if it is running and it is so it says and the is plenty of memory for it also

One thing that comes to mind is, if infected, most trojans will get included in system restores. The first step in a manual removal is to delete the restore points...

Might consider turning of sytem restore to remove all. Turn it back on and create a restore point. Then test it to see if you can restore.

It does not seem clear in original post the pc with the system restore problem is not the one that encountered the blocking of the Trojan Horse
