IIS and FTP question
Hi everyone…
I installed IIS (internet Information Services) with FTP over Win XP Pro machine. I’m able to access FTP via browser(ftp://localhost or ftp://192.168.1.3) or via command prompt using anonymous user name. My question is how to access files in the local computer using FTP from another PC Thanks Dani |

open up IE: go to tools>internet options>advanced tab>uncheck use passive FTP. close and reopen IE again. then type ftp://192.168.1.3, or you can try by pc name: ftp://computer1.
make sure you have port 21 opened on your firewall to all traffic in on that xp pro machine

yes you need to allow incoming traffic on port 80 so add the TCP port 80 exception. is there a hardware router/firewall on your network? if so you will need to configure that as well to allow outside users into your web server. you will need to forward tcp port 80 on the router and put in the ip address of your web server.
i recommend two things here: set static ip on any pc that you are opening ports to on the router. and two if this is going to be a dedicated web server i recommend putting it into the DMZ zone to help limit hackers access to your LAN as much as possible. |

I’m getting back on this problem again. I was able to access FTP server from different PC, but on the same LAN. I’m still not able to get connection from the internet. I opened port 21, disabled windows firewall and forwarded port 20 to 21 on the router ( I have cable modem and wireless NETGEAR router). Should I use Internet IP for FTP Server. LAN IP works great for the PCs in the LAN.
Please advise Thanks Dani |

to access your ftp server outside your network you need to use the public WAN ip address ie: ftp://69.135.32.211 unless you have DNS setup to point to your FTP server.
to access your ftp server inside your LAN you can use the the private ip address on for your ftp server ie: ftp://192.168.1.100 or use the computer name ie: ftp://server01 open internet explorer and go to tools>internet options>advanced tab and uncheck use passive ftp. close out of internet explorer and then try again. |
