Boot.ini
While reading a newletter this morning Fred Langa mentions that the boot.ini file can be accessed from "msconfig". He was talking about the Recovery Console and how to change it.
I have Xp SP2 with the recovery Console installed and have accessed it thur the properties of "My computer. I look in 'msconfig" and I have tabs for General ; System.ini; win.ini; services; and startup but no boot.ini. Why would that be?

Are you running Home or Pro?
Boot.ini sits in the root of C:\ It's a hidden file so you need to make hidden files visiable through folder options.

It is Pro.
Boot.ini is in the root folder. My root folder happens to be f: but I dont think that affects it. I can call it up from the start>run command. Thanks for the link Statica, the boot.ini key is not listed in the "msconfig" key mentioned there. Maybe it is because my root is in f: When I installed the OS I had two HD in it both with primary partitions, three now that I think about it. When I realized the OS was going onto F:, I thought I could fix it later rather than disconnecting the offending drive. Turns out the only drive you cant re-letter is the OS. It hasn't been a problem. On the other hand, win.ini and system.ini tabs are showing up. Of course they are in the f:\windows folder, not f:\ The only time I have a c: is if I plug in a removable drive. This is my idea of a computer game! |

i wouldn't recommend changing the drive letter. i have seen drives become corrupted/unreadable just by changing the drive letter. if you need to get to the boot.ini file there several other ways to get to it.
in system properties>advanced tab>startup and recovery>system startup or open windows explorer>tools folder options>view tab>uncheck hide protected operating system files. then look on the root of the F: drive
