VOL command from Windows ME workstation to XP network drive

I was just wondering if any one can help me here with regards to VOL command from Dos window on a Windows ME machine issued for a network drive located on an XP machine.

Normally when you issue the VOL command, the response is something like this:

Volume in drive D is Data
Volume Serial Number is XXXX-XXXX

However, when I issue this command from a Windows ME workstation for a drive mapped to an XP drive, e.g. VOL z: (where z is the drive letter of the drive on XP machine), the second line of the response is missing. I only get this:

Volume in drive Z is Data

It works fine from a Windows 2000 machine or other XP machines but not from Win ME machine.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Subhash.

Just a guess, but if that's a NTFS drive, maybe ME can't read the serial number?

Yes, it is a NTFS drive. Does that mean no chance of making it work ?

Thanks.

You might take a look through the NTFS4DOS help files, to see if that program might do the trick --- http://www.bootdisk.com/ntfs.htm

Best of luck

Why do you have to be able to read the serial number anyway?
