Cannot get desktop to display

Just finished cleaning all kinds of viruses and trojans from a friends computer and cannot get the desktop background to display. I can right click on the desktop and go to desktop and display the various choices in the window, but once selected, they will not show on the desktop....all I get is a gray screen that flickers. All the icons are displayed and they work - just no background. Probably one of the files associated with this has been damaged - how can I fix this?

I tried this - and found out I need the exact copy of XP installed on the computer - I don't have this disc yet, but told my friend to get it to me and I will try again.

Thanks
