another random xp reboot

So here's the setup...
XP Pro machine. 2 hard drives. page file was being written to the secondary drive.

No new hardware installed, no ram issues, nothing heating up. xp keeps rebooting, wont get to the login screen.

Here's what happened.

I disconnected my secondary hard drive because i was trying to back up data to a new drive. I connected the new drive, and xp kept rebooting. So I disconnected the new drive and tried it---same thing. I chkdsk it--no issues there...

I can get into safe mode---so I disabled everything...made sure my page file was writing to the primary hard disk...but it doesnt help...damn thing keeps rebooting.

If I turn the auto reboot off, then it blue screens on me with an error.
No_more_irp_stack_allocations

The only thing I remember not doing correctly was when I disconnected the secondary hard drive the first time, I did not move the writing of the pagefile over to the first drive.
Any ideas?

i would also boot into safe mode and put the page file back on the first drive to see if that fixes this issue.

In theory, this is a driver or other software issue, which encounters a stack problem. (See the MSDN article linked here.) In practice, it has historically pointed to a driver problem and also occurs when RAM itself is flawed.

Google indicates it can be an issue with a USB device.

ob1: It looks like that's already been tried:

I can rule out hardware failure, bad memory as well.

I can plug in another old hard drive into the same system(this old drive is 2 month old image of this machine) and everything works fine.

So something obviously happened on my drive that creates this issue.

I have rebooted into safe mode and tried some things to no avail.
No usb drives are attached. I even disable the usb ports in the motherboard.

Have you tried a system restore? sfc /scannow? Windows repair reinstall?

a repair install won't wipe the drive, it just deletes and reinstalls the windows system files while keeping your personal data in tact.

but dont you have to reinstall the apps?

in any case, its just annoying not to know what the hell caused it?
also, safe mode is fine...and i was hoping to diagnose the problem there.
maybe uninstall something to get going again?

Nope, all programs and personal data stays intact. But you have to reinstall SP2 if your XP disk predates SP2 (or you can make a slipstreamed disk with SP2 integrated w/XP) and reinstall all Windows Updates. The How To is in your Tips and Tricks Section.

boot into safe mode and look in the event viewer application or system log folders for any errors that might help pinpoint what is causing this.
each event will have an event ID that you can google to help determine what might be causing it and a possible solution. sometimes the event log items can be very cryptic in there description.
