xp installation

Hi, I am trying to reonstall XP on one of my machines. I have my computers hooked up to a KVM switch. When I try to install the OS my machine is not recognizing my keyboard. I then tried to install the OS with another keyboard plugged directly into the computer but it still doesn't recognize it. Is the KVM switch causing this or something else? Please let me know as I would really appreciate it.

shouldn't be the kvm, i have one with a usb keyboard and ps/2 adapter for the keybard and i can install OS's on any machine no problem.

use the original keyboard and plug it directly into the pc and try again bypassing the kvm.

have you looked in the bios for any settings pertaining to the keyboard or peripherals settings?

I just had a whole lot of erratic behavior that I could not explain while doing an installation on the weekend. It turned out to be a bad KVM switch.

Started out a few weeks back by not Id'ing one particular mouse, so I changed to another and it worked fine for a week or so. Suddenly it would not recognise one computer hooked to the switch. I unplugged and re-inserted all of the cables. Everything worked fine for another day or two. Then suddenly it stopped giving any graphics on any computer plugged into the switch.

Took the switch out of the loop and all of the hardware now works properly.

I haven't been able to find a KVM switch that will work for more then a year or two. I finally set up the shop with multiple monitors, mouse and keyboards like I used to do in the old days.

fwiw, I always use a ps/2 connected mouse and keyboard hooked directly to the pc when doing a fresh install or a repair install. Had too many problems with usb devices or kvm switches. Don't like adding extra hardware to the troubleshooting equation.

Keyboard-video-mouse switch. It's a device that lets you run multiple pc's using one monitor, keyboard and mouse.
