See if you can figure this one out
Ok, my wife's laptop just did some interesting things.
Here is my report of the error: We installed Symantec pcAnywhere onto her laptop last night. The installation file came from a privately owned FTP site that we trust. After the installation I restarted (as advised by Symantec) the machine, and it booted as normal. Until... The resolution was set to 640x480, with a 4 bit color scheme. I opened up the display settings and was greeted by... "Invalid Display Settings The currently selected graphics display driver can not be used. It was written for a previous version of Windows, and is no longer compatible with this version of Windows. The system has been started using the default VGA driver. Please contact your hardware manufacturer to get an upgraded driver, or select one of the Microsoft provided drivers." I went to nVidia's website to get the appropriate drivers, which wouldn't install because the hardware couldn't be found. The current resolution cannot be reset to normal (1280x800 32 bit). Her system: Compaq Presario R3000 AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1 GB or RAM (type unknown) nVidia GeForce4 420 Go 32M 60 gig HDD (once again, type unknown)

Anybody? We need this machine for work, your help would be greatly appreciated.
On the other hand, if someone just tells me that its fried and all downhill from here, it would be a good excuse to get a new one... |

Rule of thumb. Coincidences aren't coincidence. If the last and only thing you changed was the addtion of the Symantec software, try removing it. Or contact Symantec support and see if others have experienced the same problem. They may have a fix for you.

You probably are using an older version of PCAnywhere. The fact that you got it from a private FTP site tells me you did not buy the software and we cannot assist any further - forum rule 9, zero tolerance on piracy.
If you are looking for a freebie, use one of the flavors of VNC or the free logmein.com remote control service. Otherwise, purchase the latest version of PCAnywhere the proper way. I'm closing this thread, if you need any assistance with installing something legit, please start a new thread. |
