Question about Windows 98SE

Hi All,

Extreme newbie here. I have an external hard drive and want to transfer my data from my old crusty laptop which is running Windows 98 1st ED. The hard drive case recognizes Windows 98SE and above.

If I install Windows 98SE will I lose my data? Can I simply install this over the top of Windows 1st ED?

Thanks, Kevin

What are you trying to do? Do you want to install Win98SE onto the external hard drive? Or are you trying to update Windows (Windows 1.X?, Win95?, Win98FE?) on the laptop with Win98SE?

Gee, I haven't used Win98 in years but if the Win98SE is an upgrade I think you can just install it over Win98FE without data lose...but I would back up any important data before I started.

Hopefully GaryRouth or glc will see this thread and give you a more definite answer.

Thanks Cricket! As soon as I get all my data from this laptop I'm throwing it in the river! It's been nothing but grief since I got it 6 years ago.

Happy Holidays! Kev

Remove the hard drive and put it in a USB housing or use an IDE adapter - and connect it to a desktop computer to get the data off. Not worth the hassles to upgrade the OS just to get data. See below links:
