PIC programing

I am posting this here because it seams to be a xp problem.

I have a PIC in circut serial programer for programing the Microchip PIC's
the software to run this programer is FPP.

everything works great when used in W98-SE

but when run in XP a file is needed called GIVEIO.SYS
I have it installed and running.
it is a driver for the com-1 port, I think.
but it seams that there is no communication between the program and the programmer.
everything runs ok except I cannot read or write to the PIC.
the hardware is fine as it runs good in W98-SE

any ideas of what might be the problem, the com-1 port is set at the default.

thanks for your reply:

a pic is a process interface controler that can do a unlimited number of things.
as a example:

I have one that is programed to be a frequncy counter up into the UHF band. with LCD display

another is programed to control a DDS chip to be a 1 to 60 mhz rf sine wave siginal generator.with LCD display and a encoder to select the frequency.

and another one programed to send a morse code signal to my radio transmitter that will send a message on the air, or key my cw transmitter in morse code with my call letters id.

and the next one I am working on will be a calibrated micro-watt meter with LCD display.
better known as the K8 keyer (google it and you will see what I mean)

the software is working fine, but there is a communication problem with the com-1 port and the programmer, it looks like the giveio.sys driver does not like the Wxp OS, and that is where the problem lies.

I have tried this on several differant computers with the same results.

I could set up a computer with w98se to run this with, but I really do not want to do that,
all my systems are wxp-sp2.

the giveio.sys is only needed with the wxp systems, but seams like it don't always work.

in reality I can just scrap the FPP software all together and just use the MPLAB IDE software and the Microchip pickit 2 starter kit which works great on my system,

as soon as I can get the money together I plan on buying the Microchip MPLAB ICD which is a complete programmer and debugger for the pic chips.

this is just a mixture of my hobbies
ham radio and computers.

so what the point of morse code counter? is the software made for windows xp?

it sounds like something fun to try are you just programing in a certain language or you tell the software what to do and it wrights the code and its stored on the pic

I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying.

a frequency counter is a device / test instrument that reads the frequency of a transmitter, or oscillator.

a signal generator is a device that generates radio frequency or rf at a chosen frequency.

and the K8-keyer is a device that will key a transmitter with what ever code you chose to program into it.

these are 3 separate devices that uses a pic micro-controller.

you can also control other devices with them like the speed of stepper motors, dc motors.
you can also control devices with temperature settings.
pic micro controllers has many different applications they can be used for, even robotics use them.

they even have some that work over the network wired and wireless.
your imagination is the only limit as to there uses

I am just starting to learn how they work and how to write assembly language programs for them to do the things I want.

its a fun experience and something to learn.

now your starting to get the picture of why this post is here.

the software runs just fine, no problem with that.

also I have found that it runs fine with the giveio.sys installed on xp systems.

the problem appears when sp-2 is installed, then it don't work as good, the software runs good, but the giveio.sys running but still can't read or write to a pic, sometimes it will read good but not write or erase.
so the problem is with the giveio.sys file.

I have set up a w98se computer so I can do the things I need to do with FPP.

I also have all the Microchip software and programmer on this computer and it all runs fine.
so my needs are met,
but I would like to have everything on this one computer.

but there may not be a solution for this problem.
and after I get to where I can write assembly code good, I won'r even need the FPP any more except to program some old out dated pic's
