Paging File Location Question

Seagate 7200.10 320GB- XP on 40GB partition / programs 140GB partition/ games 140GB partition

WD 80GB- music, photos, videos

I have heard that it's good to place the paging file somewhere other than where your OS is located. Where should I place it? I do have partition software.

Thank you.

Edit: does it matter if I put the paging file on a primary partition or move it to a logical drive?

Hello "12"

Lucky number I assume!

I have 2 internal drives both being 80 gig each. In researching this same question I found the best place to put the paging file for me was in the 1st drive (which holds the operating system- WinXp Home) on the second partition. So in other words I have the first drive partitioned into my "C" drive and my Paging file is in my "F" drive with D and E being CD rom and DVD drives. Also found by keeping the Paging file set to "Custom" with the Initial size and the Maximum size set to the same number (think it is 2.5 times the size of your memory) so as it will not be defragged.
I'm no expert but this should be a good starting point for you
Happy Holidays

Edit: I meant to say my Page file is in my "X" drive (See Attachment)

Since you have 2GB of RAM in your computer I don't think your system is going to the paging file that much. I wouldn't even bother worrying about it.

TPM- Forgive my ignorance but am I coming to the correct conclusion that your diagram shows your G & H as logical drives in a extended partition and same with the X drive? Or am I misreading the diagram? Thanks for the info.

I thought about that as well Cricket. I'm probably putting my thoughts into something not warranted. I'm also confused as what to set the paging file at. I have read here that it's best to set the minimum and maximum to the same value and that is what I have always done but then I read on "The Elder Geek" site that it's best to set the minimum to the lowest it will allow, 2mb I believe, and the maximum to the equivalent of you system ram. But again I guess your answer will be the same....with 2GB it doesn't really matter.

Yes you are correct. They are all Logical. At some point I was advised to keep the paging file on the same disk as the operating system. My Page file was on my G drive early on

I have the same situation , basically. My paging file is on my second drive.

I have my C drive set to no paging file. Yet when I run a defrag I have a host of tiny whatevers (clusters?) called fragmented pagefile files on my C drive. And they just sit there defrag after defrag???????

I want them outta my hair. Any Ideas?
