XP Booting Problem

My PC was in standby for 2 hours before I logged again, FS 2004 was in the CD drive. For whatever reazon ,it re-started by itself. Because it was not a proper action,XP asked to scan drives (C,D)
It only scaned C and stayed there.Try couples of time but never got to scan D drive. OK, re-started again, selected to previous ... and just did the same. re-started in safe mode, command prompt, when start it stop within few seconds Tried the software of the HHD as a boot disk but no result. When booting it started with the XP. this is a less than 3 months WD 160 GB HDD. I do not mind trying to re-install XP again but I fear about activation because I have to call to activated on this HDD. any suggestion, ideas . Thaks and Happy Holidays

XP .2,INTEL PESV 845D, P4 2.4MHz , 512 DDR MHz ,ATI Radeon AGP ,LG DVD-RW, 400W PS. The last mayor updated was IE the newest version. When computer start, it shows XP in the black background, then(sometimes) it starchecking files on C. once it finished C, it stay there, does ot jump to check files on D. or that "windows did nt started successfully" I choosed: to start normal, last know or safe mode(prompt). when on safe mode, start the scaning and within second it stays idle. no flashing dots or anything that'll tell me is running. recently I notice a lots of pop-ups on my PY and laptop, even I set the bloking to HIGH. but my laptop is working OK. I do not whant to thing some kind of evilware got into my system. Thanks.

You can activate a legal copy of windows as many times as you like...at worst you will have to phone Microsoft so they can let you activate again.

Wink

Did you try unpluging all but necesary hardware specialy usb devices you may have and try to be more patient let windows do what is doing in it's own time. And you can always do repair install witch will save your important data and you will lose only updates.

Thanks to you all. I believe the problem could be hardware related. I have a small HDD that I replaced with the 160GB. First thing this morning I disconnected the 160 and re-installed the 40 GB and it was doing the same thing . I'll try to find out later today what could be the problem. Thanks again.

I got the 40 GB to work OK. But the 160GB can't check files on D drive. Now ,I do not think is hardware related.
