Question Slow or Zero performance on Defrag

not sure if it's XP or Norton, getting similar symptoms from both, Speed Disk under Norton And defrag under System tools are very Very slow. Somtimes it just stops, like the P/C forgets what it's doing. It's not a system lock-up because the mouse still works, and I can close down the App and go on to something else with-out having to re-boot. I don't think it's hardwaqre related, because I've seen this on both my old machine and the new one I just built. Any insightful ideas out there.

Just boot to safe mode and defrag there and see if there is any difference. Lots of tiimes your problem that you describe is due to the other things that are running in the backround, but in safe mode they should not be running.
