xp systems

my brother sum how managed to install and second operating system(xp pro) the original was also xp pro. the prob now is the second OS was only half completed so i dont need it how can i get rid of it. The problem with the orinal OS was that when you log on the windows screen doesn't show - only the background could be seen. When i press ctrl-alt-del to get the task manager up, 'explorer.exe' is not listed under the process tab, when i click on new task and type in explorer.exe it says it could not be found and check the file path.

If all else fails how do i re-format the hard drive - do i need a boot disk?
