Hello,
A while back I was browsing with IE and I chose to set an image as wallpaper. I've since downloaded a different wallpaper and set it up as my primary wallpaper using the display-properties function in the control panel. Whenever I boot up now, the earlier wallpaper is displayed first, and then my new wallpaper appears after Win98 is done loading. I suppose this isn't a big deal, but I find it rather annoying. I'd appreciate any advice you can offer about how I eliminate this. Also, while I'm on the topic of wallpapers, I've always wondered whether using large image files (e.g. a 1MB jpg) as wallpaper truly affects performance? Thanks, -ollie- |

Hmmm, not sure about this, but it may be that the old wallpaper is loading, then it is loading a "user profile" that includes the new wallpaper. That is just a guess though, and could be totally wrong.
As for the BIG wallpapers, I have some as big as 5 megs that I use, and I also have 918 fonts installed on my computer, and I have not noticed any significant slowdowns from either one. I guess it could slow down an older system, but I had big wallpapers and 900 fonts installed on a Pentium 166 without any noticable slowdown. |

Re: profiles
Hmmm, you may be onto something with regards to a profile being at fault. Which brings me to another question thats been nagging me for some time... is it possible to run Win98 without using a profile? I'm the only one using my computer, and I installed Win98 myself (and don't remember choosing to enable a profile), yet in the taskbar "start-menu" I have the option to log off? This problem also seems to manifest itself in the handling of my "My Documents" folder, since I seem to have one on my desktop and one in a "profiles" sub-folder.
Any additional advice would be much appreciated... thanks, -ollie-

Start--settings--active desktop--uncheck 'view as webpage'. That should keep the earlier wallpaper from showing at startup. Or just set the same wallpaper twice.

Open Themes in control panel, apply your theme, NOT including the wallpaper, then open display properties, set wallpaper, then go back to themes and save the theme INCLUDING the wallpaper, set a different theme, then set it back to the one you just saved.

ive had this happen to me too. the easiest way to deal with it is, before u set ur wall paper, right click the desktop, properties - and change ur current wallpaper to none. then, apply, click ok, and then set ur new wallpaper
hope this helps
