xp start-up

When I start my xp computer, the computer loads, and then has ....xmnt 2002 programe not found.
checking files on E. After the check on E, it reads that no problems were found. then the login screen comes up, and when I click my username, the computer goes back to the shut down mode, and then the computer starts up again, going through the same setup as before.
.by using the ...last known startup... I can get into the computer. So I thought, lets defrag. the volume E. Disk fragmenter reads as: disk fragmenter has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume : E. Please run shkdsk/f.
When I run shkdsk/f, I get the message....cannot lock current drive chkdsk cannot run because the volume is being used by another process.Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time you start.
Because I cannot start my computer the normal way, how do I run disk fragment.
Hoping that someone can help me overcome my start problem.
Thanks for any input. spiders.
