is it possible to share a dial up connection?

i know the performance would bite but many people have been asking me if it is possible, most of the time its just for AOL IM, so nothing too intensive, if anyone knows tia.

If you mean networking two Windows computers together and sharing one connection, yes. Win98SE, Me, and 2000 all have Internet Connection Sharing. You install a NIC in each system, with a crossover cable connecting them. Here's a how-to link:

crossover cable will only work with two computers, if you want to have more than two computers then you need a hub or a switch type hub, the latter works best. no noticeable drop in performance when useing the switch type hub because it allows full duplex on each computer, and full bandwith. a 5 port switch runs about 35 dollars us. I have had 4 systems connected to internet and download all at the same time from differant web sites and one dial-up connection. works great.

Get the dialup working properly on the "server", go into add/remove programs, Windows setup, Communication, and install Internet Connection Sharing. The wizard will take you through the rest of it.

So is it possible to share a dial-up connection with no drop in performance if a switch is used instead of a hub?

A dialup connection is so slow compared to even a half duplex 10 mbit network that a hub or switch is immaterial.
