Cal??
In one of our offices we have 12 computers and a server.
The old server was windows 2000. The new server I am building will have 2003, question is what do they mean by CAL? The 12 workstations have windows xp pro, do I need to buy windows 2003 server cals for each of the 12 workstations? The reason I ask, all the windows 2003 server OEM OS I found come with 5 cal or more. Can someone please explain. Thanks

"question is what do they mean by CAL?" CAL is the number of clients the server will support, 25 CAL = 25 PC's
"do I need to buy windows 2003 server cals for each of the 12 workstations?" Yes

You will need to buy the server and a 10 pack. The server comes with 5.

I am a bit confused. A friend of mine owns a small chain of drug stores (pharmacies) his server uses windows server 2003 OEM, however all his 23 PCs linked to it are on windows xp or 2000 Pro. ( all legit with COA on them).
He never bought any Cals and the network works great. I looked at his server and it is legit, it has the COA on the side of the machine. What is the CAL for then? |

I'm sure he has at least 23 CAL's. He probably bought them with the server package.

2000 Server has the same CAL requirements. We used to be able to cheat the system with NT, but 2000 closed that hole.
