Outlook Express.

Hi everyone.
I have this problem with O.E. Every 2 weeks or so, it seems, this Pop Up appears telling
me:''To free up disk space O.E. can compact messages. etc.etc." Well I have plenty space
on my disk and I don't need it to compact, I think.
Problem is it don't take ''no'' for an answer. Click ''cancel'' and it will be back soon.
Click ok and it makes a whole slew of .BAK files and dumps them in my ''recyle bin.
So, I like to get rid of this PopUp. Any body with some suggestions, please?

Tools, options, maintenance. Uncheck compact messages in the background.

Thanks glc. One more question. In the window that comes up on my screen in
''maintenance'' there is only one block checked and it reads: ''Delete news messages in 5 dayes
after being downloaded.''
Is this the one you are referring to? Is does not seem to relate to my problem.

I just checked, and my OE doesn't have that "uncheck" option either. I got to Googling and the "Uncheck compact messages in the background" feature was removed when SP2 came out. Now it just compacts messages every 100th time you open the program up. I couldn't find any info on any sites that said there is a way to turn it totally off now.

Let it compact when it wants. This is basic database maintenance anyway.

Thanks Juppi, I thought I was going crazy.
But what about that slew of .BAK files it creates and dumps in my recycle bin every time
I let it compact? Can I safely delete those? It seems that it started doing this after I
upgraded to IE 7, does that make sense?
Thanks guys.

Well, to be honest, I initially thought it was like glc was saying, and I only went to look and double check when you said you couldn't find it. Guess that shows how much I update my settings, huh, because I didn't know it was that way either until I went searching for an answer. Google is my friend.
