Windows XP Pro Updates ( 1ST Build )
When I frist tried to update XP it brought up an error number 0x8DDD0004. I sent this to Microsoft & in the mean time I was having to go to hospital having some tests done. These tests lasted for about 3 days When I finally got to see what Microsoft was wanting to know, what maybe had caused the problem, they had already closed the case. The only thing I know why it would not get updates, I did not have computer set to do automatic updates . I downloaded 4 I think that day, after I enabled automatic updates. I went back to windows update the next day and it came up with sixty eight updates. Some of them were priority updates I think 1 or 2 might have been critical updates.
Do I have to download all of these updates and should I download them in the order they are lined up on the page ? Or do all of them even apply to my version of windows? I noticed one of the updates was for Media player 6 . I have media player 9 with this version of XP. Am I correct in thinking all I need to download right now are the priority and critical updates ? So I can go ahead & get motherboard driver updates, DVD drive driver updates & other software installed, such as anti-virus and firewall, & spyware software, then go back download the rest of the windows updates. Will I be asked what location to download these updates too? If so what would be the location? Also will I be asked a location for any drivers that I update & what would that locatione be? Thanks for help with my feeble brain. |

68 sounds about right. I hope you have high speed Internet. Get all criticals and priorities at the same time. They will download and self-install, no user intervention needed except to agree to a couple EULA's.
All you need to do is run the motherboard CD to install all those drivers, plus install video card drivers (if you have a card). The DVD drive doesn't need drivers, but you need to install the software it came with. |

Thanks glc, I guess I'm in for a long night of downloading as I have dial up right now. Hoping my phone company will get their act together with the dsl. One of my neighbors I know has dsl & does not live more than 50 yards from my house. The phone company says they can only give out a certain number of accounts in an area.

Ask your neighbor if you can bring your computer next door and hook up to his router to get the setup done.
No cable in your area? |

GLC,I do not know if there is cable around or not. I live in country about 15 miles from nearest larger town. I have DISHNETWORK. I found out today I can get DSL from phone company. They are sending free modem also. I had to get get their second fastest DSL speed to get the free modem but I think it will be worth the price which will be around $32.00 a month. I should have modem by the 19th of this month.
I got all the updates downloaded from Microsoft. Took about 2.5 hours. That's not that bad since I have a slow dial up. I think its just around 24 kbps. The only update I did not get is IE 7. Have they worked all the bugs out of this browser yet? If so I will update to IE 7. I am using Firefox most of the time. I have to , to use this forum or I did when I was using old laptop running "98. I am on my new computer as I write. Thanks for your help & feedback. |

If you are using Firefox and like it, there's no reason to get IE7.

Some people love it, some people hate it. If you have a clean, freshly loaded system it should install and work fine. It's the crudded up machines that seem to have issues with it. Note that it's a pretty big download - best to wait for broadband.
