weird, really weird!

My in-laws have a UAW, (Yes, United Auto Workers!) freebie computer. Remember when Ford and Chrysler were giving these away?

Anyhow it's a 700 mhz, 256 Ram, running Windows ME. When you go to start up, it goes through the boot process, shows the ME screen, then says something about an "error loading the lmouse driver" then it COMPLETELY shuts down!

I can get in with safe mode, BUT I can't use the mouse....any ideas?

What if you unplug the mouse, will it boot to normal mode?
Have you replaced the mouse??

Even if I unplug it, it still kicks out. I even tried my trackball on it. It doesn't matter if it's plugged in or not, you still get the same error message.

I can get into safe mode, just can't use the mouse...

Can you navigate around in safemode without the mouse? there is a way to do it with the arrow keys but I can't remember now how you do it.
If you can get there have a look in Device Manager to see what is listed for the mouse.
Do you have a USB mouse? try enabling USB legacy support in the BIOS and then try a USB mouse.

Ok...I'm in with a mouse in safe mode!

However, if I try to go normal mode, it cuts out. It's gotta be a driver, huh?

In safemode go to device manager and uninstall the mouse then reboot as normal and see if Windows automatically reinstalls the mouse.

Actually I'm using my trackball, (Microsoft). I did uninstall the other 1, went to reboot, and it shut down again!

Have you got a spare power supply you can swap in?
Can you boot it into DOS and have it run stable enough to run some diagnostics on the RAM and harddrive?

I don't have a spare power supply, however to get into DOS is this correct?
1. Start
2. Run
3. Type command, then hit enter
Then what commands am I going to give in DOS?

You run the diagnostics in DOS before Windows boots so you will need the memtest boot floppy and the diagnostic boot floppy of the harddrive manufacturer.
You can get memtest here http://www.memtest.org/ but you will need to know the make of the harddrive in order to go to the manufacturers site to download the dignostic tool.
