windows upgrade

Ok, I'm thinking of upgrading my system, but I do have one concern. If I go from my old 32bit Athlon XP to a core 2 duo, does that mean that none of my 32 bit software is going to work? Does that also mean that I would have to buy a new windows cd to take advantage of the newer cpu? would I even be able to use my xp 32bit cd to install windows? A guy I work with had just upgraded and put vista on his system, but he said that he couldnt get any of his old programs to work on it, no to mention I've heard other people say nothing but bad things about there experience with vista, I'm not ready for that. So before I upgrade and buy anything I was hoping to get a good idea of what I would be getting my self into.

If you upgrade to Core 2 Duo there isn't any reason why your 32bit progams won't run..Even if you install XP 64 bit they will run...

Some applications not working with Vista is another story.

Any program that uses 16bit or 32bit drivers wont work, but most others should work even on Vista since it uses the WOW64 subsystem.

32 bit XP will install and work fine on a 64 bit processor.

ok thats cool, now that I know my xp cd will work, would it be a waste to get a core 2 duo cpu if I was to put 32bit xp on it?

Hardly. The Athlon 64 and the 64 bit Pentium 4's have been around longer than 64 bit XP, you don't see everyone running 64 bit XP on those.
