Do I need Java?

I have a relatively new sony laptop. It came with some software installed including Java. Now for the second time it keeps asking me to install the latest version. This appears to be a very large program (over 100mb) and 2 versions are already on this PC.

I am not aware that I ever use java. I don't think it is on my other PCs since they do not ask me to install the latest version.

Do I really need Java? If I unistall i what kind of problems will that create?

Java may be used by a number of programs in the background or you may be using it for web page applets. Either way, it's highly recommended that you keep your system updated since a lot of these updates are security rollouts. Re: the space - it's being updated so you shouldn't be losing any disk space.

Statica,

Thanks for the response. That is just what I needed to know. I'll just update it rather than removing it.

Thanks again.
