Dual Core Processor and Win 95
Hi there, I am in the middle of a new build, and am considering loading both Win95 (or Win98) and XP on the same partitioned hard drive. I really miss playing the original versions of Tomb Raider and Duke Nukem. Partition questions and booting up with dual OS questions aside, I was wondering if anyone knew whether this is possible ? I mean, will these games run with a dual core processor powering the PC ? Sure would like to hear from anyone that has tried this or someone who is a lot more knowledgeable than me (most PC builders - I'm still a newb)

Is it possible to run those games in XP under compatibility mode for 95/98? If so, just load up XP as your only OS.

There will not be any driver support for your new hardware. It's also going to choke on any more than 512mb ram. I'd use compatibility mode.

Furthermore, I wouldn't be surprised if the win95/98 never actually finished, but crashed right in the middle at some point. I'd go with ther others' suggestions and try XP compatibility mode.

Thanks for all your answers. Sure glad I asked before going forward with my idea. This will save me some measure of frustration.

Hi all
Sorry my reply is so late - but I thought I'd add another consideration: use a virtual machine, and run Win95 in a virtualized environment. Less hassle with driver issues, etc. A free tool for this is available from Microsoft - "Virtual PC 2004" (if you move to Vista at some point in the future, you could move up to Virtual PC 2007, which supports Vista as a host). It you'd like to read more about it, info and download links start at the Virtual PC home page --- http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx And here's a direct link to the "Technical Overview", a short little document (only 27 pages - a Word doc) that covers what operating systems can be virtualized as clients (basically, anything from DOS to XP) --- http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...l_Overview.doc Sometimes no matter how you tweak Compatibility Mode, a game still won't run = that's when it might help to try Virtual PC. Best of luck . . . Gary |
