Pc Will not start up

I have a friend who pc will not start up even in safe mode. His pc is a dell and when it is turned on nothing will come on . Like the key board,mouse or monitor. I took the hard drive out and put it in my dell and it comes up and windows works no trouble so he has a gateway and I then put his harddrive in the gateway and I can't get in to windows . I try safe mode it freezes then I try last good and nothing . I can get as far as MUP.SYS then it stops . Put it back in my Dell and all works . Got any ideas ? Oh no new hardware or software was installed.

Your Dell and his Dell are probably close to the same which is why the HD works in your Dell and not the Gateway.
Sounds like a dead PSU. Quick check, unplug all drives/pull video card and ram/extra case fans. If CPU fan starts and/or get beeps, one of the previosly removed items is bad. If still nothing, 1st choice: PSU bad/2nd: mobo/3rd: both/4th: CPU/5th: a combo of any.

Dells have ABCD lights on the back. What is their status when you try to fire it up? If all 4 are not green you have a problem, the online manual for your model will tell you what they mean.
