Cleaning the dust bunnies out is the first priority. Just use a can of compressed air (after you've shut down and unplugged, of course) and blow the fans and heatsinks clean.

On the software front, you can always try to limit the items that load at StartUp.

What kind of computer do you have? A home built one or a name brand?

You should have a good compliment of security software to help keep viruses and malware off your computer. A good antivirus and antispyware programs are essential to keep your computer running clean.

Other utilities include a good temp file and registry cleaner like CCleaner and if you're using a name brand computer you'll want to remove unnecessary things from the system with PC Decrapifier.

Making sure you don't use more than 85% of your total hard drive space is also important. If you have less than 15% hard drive space left Windows will start to act a little strange and the swap file won't have room to do it's thing.
