Why not just use XP to format the drive during the process of the new install?
You could put the dirve into another pc as a slave and format it Windows that way also.

Ok, I just booted from the CD and I think it just tried to repair what was wrong with it. I thought that would be ok because I wouldn't have to reinstall everything. After it was done I needed to updateXP with service pack 2. It downloaded but faild 3x on installing. Here is what I kept getting.
"A component's file does not match the verification info present in the components manifest". |

A repair is not the same as a reinstall. You cannot reformat the OS partition from within Windows. If you want to do a clean install, the link glc provided is very helpful with tips and screenshots. Do all of your backups and make sure you have cds or links to download your favorite programs again when you are done. After the reinstall, install a good security program before you go online, bleed it for updates, then visit the MS update page and do the same. Restoring your data and programs is the next step, and it can actually be a good "housecleaning" if you are not in a big hurry. Good luck, and post back with any questions.
