Boot

I am trying to set up a dual boot system so i can have have nt 4.0 windows 2000 server and Linux on 1 system. I have nt 4.0 on it already. How do I put the other 2 on it please? We can start with 2000 server. This is for training purposes only.

I partitioned some of the free space on HD and want to set up another system on that drive. How do I do this, please?

I can't answer the Linux question with any accuracy, but if NT is already on there, you can install 2000 on another partition and it will do a dual boot menu for you. The rule with Microsoft OS is install the first one preferably on the boot partition, then move on from oldest to newest, using a different partition each time. The boot partition must be formatted in a filesystem that ALL operating systems can deal with - because of bootloader compatibility. I think - and don't hold me to this - that to introduce Linux you should use a 3rd party bootloader.

Download it on another computer and put it on a CDR or flash key.

Never heard of a 3C508. If it's a 3C509, 2K has native driver support. How about some specs on this computer, please?

For now, I deleted the OS and starting with win 2000 server with sp4. I then will try adding NT 4.0. I will let you know how I make out or if I am having issues.

I have a question guys I have 2000 server set up on my computer with SP4 working fine. I am also trying to dual boot it by adding NT 4.0. Right now I am at the point where it wants to know where i want to put the OS. I created a partition for it with 2GB for it and when I select it to install on that partition I get

Your C: drive is unformatted, damaged or formatted with a file system not compatible with NT. tO CONTINUE INSTALLING SETUP WILL HAVE TO FORMAT THE DRIVE.

* to format the c: drvive and continue setup press F ***aqll data will be lost***

* hit esc to return to previous page

Can't I put it on the newly created partition so it will dual boot? If so, how do I get it on that , please?

No, NT *MUST* go on first!

Zero out your hard drive, then use a DOS or Win9x bootdisk with FDISK on it to create a 2gb FAT16 partition. That means do NOT enable large disk support. Install NT on that partition. THEN install 2K, make a new partition during Setup and install it on that. This partition needs to be about 4gb.

ok I types fdisk and set up a 2gb partition. Should I now continue setting up NT on that partition?

Ok, here is where i am at with my dual boot system. I have nt installed with no internet access because my system doesn't recognize my NIC card. What do I need to do next to get windows 2000 server. I believe I need to create another primary partition on my system for 2000 server. How do I do this please.

I appreciate any help given. Thank you very much.

Boot with the 2000 CD and set up a partition in the unpartitioned space - and install 2000 on it.

I tried that already but it won't take the unpartitioned space. it will take only the already partitioned space. I don't understand why it wont and is pissing me off for 2 days now. Why would my system do this please?

Someone else told me I need to use something to set up another primary partition. How do I do that, please?

Are you saying that you can't just tell Setup to install 2000 into the unpartitioned space - then it asks you how big you want the partition to be? If this is the case - HINT:

fdisk...................

glc, I did use fdisk for nt already, when I try to install 2000 after that the system wont take the unpartitioned space. In theory your way should work because i've done it the way before. What could be causing this?

I have an iso called bootitng that supposedly partitions for me but i have never used/nor try it before. Do I just put the cd in drive and boot up?

If all you did was copy the iso to a cd, it's not going to boot. You have to OPEN the iso in CD burning software (it's an IMAGE) and burn it. Either that or it's not a bootable iso. If someone "gave" this to you, throw it away and go download it from the official site.

No, that won't have anything to do with it, but you need to install #1 whenever you get around to it.

It has been SO long since I've updated a NT system, I don't remember which file is which - if you are on the page that says High Encryption (128 bit) those *should* be the right files.

Oh stop it - just tell us!
