Microsoft's instructions for backing up, saving and restoring the registry are here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756 no third party app is necessary.
If you're going to be working in the registry use it. Restore isn't the best choice for that but check your restore points regularly. You may need a recent one and it won't help if the last one is from a month ago. No third party app is necessary unless you want to experiment.

OK you're running XP pro and you need to repair the registry?
Could we have some history please, we need to know a little more in order to help you. When did you start having trouble with ntback up ? Did it just not work this morning? When you checked Event Viewer what showed up? If you Ctrl>Alt>Del does it shows up? |

I found this on Goggle and it worked perfectly for me...Thanks anyway.
think I found the solution. First, open "Manage" by right clicking on MyComputer. Then click on "Removable Storage" If nothing appears (rountine just hangs) then use Task Manager to close the "Manage Computer" application Now often Explorer delete the FILES in folder \system32\NtmsData\ located in your WinXP folder (for me the folder was C:\WINNT\system32\NtmsData) Then start Ntbackup. It should first say that it is search for backup devices and then the Wizard will start. (if all goes well, you can go back to Manage Computer and click again on Removable Storage - it should now work (and will show any DVD, CD, or tape drives that are in your system) I think what happens is the the removable storage databases located in \system32\NtmsData\ get corrupted. Hope this helps. It worked for me Cheers |

I use system restore and it has saved me at least once. It was nice to see the computer report an error and fail to start, then go to restore and start normally. I haven't noticed using restore has been that much of an issure.

The problem with the people who tell you not to use restore is they'e not around when your computer won't start...becuase you didn't use restore.
