Moving into a new server

hello all.

ive got a server running server 2003 thats starting to reach its limitations, n top of that i need the pc itself for something else.

i have another pc much more suited for being a erver, considerably more ram, faster cpu.

i need to switch into the new system, any recomendations on how i should do it?

both systems are AMD via based, i figured I could probably get away with ghosting the harddrives and then maybe running a repair install. (but i dont have an sp1 server disk.... and im running sp1, i dont want to loose that....)

Download SP1 and make a slipstreamed disk.

With older versions of Ghost you both servers would have the same SID's which almost guarantees a problem.

A safer approach is to install W2K3 server on your new computer, dcpromo it to a DC, transfer the domain roles, transfer all the services, shutdown your old server. Once you determine no problems were caused by this, then you would dcpromo it down and remove services.

It could become more complex depending on which version of Windows 2003 server you are running. SMB would be the most problematic. Other issues would be if it was running Exchange or SQL Server.
